Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effects of sociodemographic and family characteristics on the quality of sibling relationships among middle-aged adults. It also examines the effects of sibling relationship quality on psychological well-being and physical health, and whether the effects differ by gender and sibling composition.
Methods: Data were collected from 376 men and women aged 40~59. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were performed.
Results: Sibling relationship quality was higher among the people who were married, and with more frequent contact with their siblings. Also, sibling relationship quality had a positive effect on psychological well-being and physical health. While the effect of the quality of sibling relationships on psychological well-being did not differ by gender or sibling composition, the effect of the quality of sibling relationships on physical health was significantly higher in men compared to women, and among the same gender siblings compared to different gender siblings.
Conclusions: This study added valuable data on the under-studied sibling relationships among middle-aged adults. Implications for future research and practice were discussed.
